Trees Like Stones

I can’t look at trees today

like Mary Oliver or think

in my heart of hearts stones

are alive.

                     I’ve often suspected

such exuberance of expression

hides the more pervasive dark

that fills all those other moments,

that encircles the poem’s oasis

like disease besieging a cell.

We answer the invitation, the invitation

of the aching joy. We ignore on invitation

the alcoholic, chain-smoking

depression.

                            A thud

as though a shelf heavy with books

let go. Kate, on the floor, like a corpse,

like a stone.

                          Let’s not be dramatic.

She fainted. She’s fine. She’ll be fine.

Trees too fall in the forest. I hear them

sometimes, harvesting wood for the winter.

If You Don’t Like My Poems

What the fuck is wrong with you?

What?

You think it’s the poems?

Not honest

enough? not

raw

enough?

It could be the poems.

What Visitor

What if, after a morning’s hard writing

You sat and emptied your mind of all that residual clutter

And took a moment to write what looks like

A poem.

It doesn’t have to be a poem. Poems are hard

Like diamonds or sweaty labor in the hot sun.

What if you just freed your mind and asked God

Or if you don’t believe in God anymore

then just words

To do their work—and tell you in absolute honesty

What needs to be said.

                                                  Right now.

                                                                           Right here.

What visitor would come?
